Michael Fitzgerald

Michael Fitzgerald studied art at Winchester and Wimbledon, studying under tutors including Valerie Thornton, William Crozier, Patrick Heron and John Elwin-Davis.

His painting starts from drawings moving through a particular landscape. Mike says “I know a painting is starting to work when I can visually travel through it and I can sense the experience I felt when I was there.”

The images that emerge have a strong sensation of ‘Spirit of Place’ – the perception that a site has many layers of human experience laid down into its fabric: the feeling that we are here in this place now, but many have passed before leaving their imprint. This is Mike’s inspiration.
